Prince Historic District

Reading City, Berks County, PA

   

The Historic District was established in 1982. It includes more than 800 sites along the Sixth Street corridor (originally Price Street) between Cherry and Canal Streets. The area is predominantly residential, but it includes significant examples of ecclesiastical and commercial architecture. Approximately 75% of the existing buildings were constructed between 1850 and 1890.

Industries included at one time in the district include a nail factory, a hat factory. a rope factore and a hardware factory. It was also home to railroad shops where the Philadelphia & Reading Company designed its locamotives, known thorughout the country.

The neighborhood district was self-sufficient with homes, factories, a major trolley route (on South Sixth Street), and a significant shopping center (the South Reading Market House).
