Neighborhoods

European settlers began arriving in the 17th century, with the area initially part of Chester Township, established in 1692 It was incorporated in 1880. The name "Delran" is a portmanteau of "Delaware" and "Rancocas," reflecting the township's location at the confluence of the Delaware River and Rancocas Creek.

Delran operates under the Faulkner Act's Mayor-Council system of government, which was implemented in 1972, making it one of 71 municipalities in New Jersey to use this form of government.
